Tour of Missouri

Last week-end was Memorial day

Nathan and I took advantage of the long week-end to explore
our new state {Missouri}

Friday night
We kicked off the week-end
with a BBQ in the park with our friends
{Josh and Lauren}
BBQ, especially outdoor BBQ,  is very popular in Kansas city.
There are coal barbecues throughout a nearby park for public use.

We felt 'oh SO Kansas city...'

Early Saturday
Nathan and I hit the road
We found the small town of Rocheport, MO and the Katy Trail
This town is a cyclist dream.
The Katy trail is a 'rails to trails' project.
It is an old railroad turned into a beautiful biking trail,
spanning almost across the state of Missouri.

We rented bikes
and spent the day cycling the trail, enjoying the scenic views of the Missouri river.

Yeah Bikes!

Along the trail there are many quant places to stop, including wineries...
Who knew there was wine country in Missouri?!

Les Bourgeois winery

After 6 hours of biking we enjoyed a much needed rest and lunch
at Les Bourgeois winery

The Missouri River

After a late lunch we headed to Jefferson city.

Jefferson city is a very small capital of Missouri.
We stayed at the Cliff Manor Inn.
Cliff Manor Inn Built in 1866
Although the city is quiet and small
it is very pretty and historic.
Sunrise from our room.
The Capital Building, Jefferson city & Missouri river.
The Capital Building
Jefferson city, like much of the mid-west, has a rich
rail road history.

Lewis and Clark Monument
The first explores to 'officially' document and explore across America.

Now that's a Door!
After a morning meandering in Jefferson city
we headed onto St.Louis

First stop:
A St. Louis Cardinals Baseball game!

Take me out to a ball game!
Play ball!

Nathan and Angela in Busch Stadium, St.Louis
View from our hotel.
Our friends in St.Louis: Devon, Joel, Steve, and Nathan.
Monday we explored more of St. Louis
and joined our friends at the St. Louis City museum.

The city museum is an unique place, in many ways it is more like a jungle gym!

Hamster wheel... I have a whole new respect for hamsters!
A maze of tunnels, passages, and slides, etc...
Nathan making his way through a tunnel!
Angela, Nathan, Joel, and Steve at City Museum
Ferris wheel love!
The Gateway arch is an infamous part of the St.Louis skyline.

The Great Mississippi river
After a full day in St.Louis we started the 4 hour {ish} drive back to Kansas city.
On our way we explored more of Missouri's wine country.
There are So many wineries!
We found this beautiful winery on a hill,
enjoyed some wine tasting, entertainment, and supper.

Cheers to a wonderful tour of Missouri.

Life is a Highway: Kansas City Road trip

3 days,
2 provinces,
10 states, and
3,530.9 Km's later
we arrived at our Kansas city destination!
Pre-departure route mapping!

My Family
My brother Craig and I made a great road trip team!
We shared the driving and co-pilot/navigation roles.
Thanks to my very thoughtful friend
we had a map and didn't get lost at all!
(Thanks Rachel)

Co-pilot Craig
Day One:
Our first destination was Boston, Massachusetts

We arrived in Boston early evening
and our hotel was in a central location
so we had lots of daylight to explore the downtown...

We discovered that:
Boston is a beautiful city!
Boston Park Plaza Hotel (Hotwire special and great location!)
Craig in Boston

Angela in Boston
Craig and Angela Boston Waterfront
The Boston waterfront is SO beautiful
and filled with sailboats, yatchs, etc...
It reminded me of Caribbean island waterfronts!

We also explored a few pubs in Boston.
My brother Craig was told about this old pub called the "Bell in hand"
It claims to be the oldest tavern in North America
and with an established date of 1795
It seems likely to be true!

The Bell in Hand Tavern

Day Two:
Boston, MA to Columbus, OH
This was our biggest driving day
about 14 hours in the car.

We drove through
Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania,
and a good portion of Ohio.

Pennsylvania is a beautiful state... Lots of mountains!
We arrived in Columbus, OH after dark, with sore bottoms, and
both crashed immediately upon arriving at our hotel.

Day Three
Columbus, OH to Kansas city, MO

Lots of flat road... Somewhere in Ohio

Day three looked a lot like Day two
Except a lot flatter Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois
are very, very flat.
In fact, they make the rolling hills of
Missouri very noticable.

Yeah! Missouri:)
Sometime in the early evening
we happily arrived in Kansas city!:)

Since Craig needed to make the most of his short time in Kansas city
we tried to pack as much Kansas city fun
into a day and a half, as possible!

Craig in Kansas city!
We explored the plaza, downtown, walked the parks...

Downtown Kansas city
City Market, downtown, Kansas City

Buying plants at the market:)
Craig the b-ball star outside Sprint Center Stadium
Kansas city is well known for Jazz music especially during the 1930's
A huge downtown mural represents this era

Craig and I downtown Kansas city
I love the old theatre's in Kansas city!

Later,
Craig, Nathan, and I enjoyed lunch on the plaza

Cheers to a great road trip team!
Craig, Nathan, Angela

We're not the only Canadian's to make KC our home!
We had time for a game of 'Bocce ball' in Loose park

Me winning the game:)
Of course a trip to Kansas city is not complete
without some good KC BBQ

We met some friends at a local BBQ hotspot
Oklahoma Joe's is a very popular restaurant at a gas station!

Oklahoma Joe's: Notice the line-up!
Yep! It's a gas station!
Later
we enjoyed some local entertainment on the plaza

And ended our night at a Duelling Piano Bar:

Two baby grands vs Two talented Pianists.

It was a unique experience.
The entertainment was great, the crowed was unusual...
we counted 19 different Bachlorettes!
This made for a funny experience none of us will Ever forget!

Duelling Pianists!
It was a fantastic trip!
I am SO thankful my brother Craig joined me
on this road trip adventure!

Now it's time to get things organized in Kansas city:)
